The dream of artificial intelligence has run into a reality as mundane as it is relentless: there simply aren’t enough memory chips to go around. While data centers compete for massive quantities of these components to power generative models, consumer electronics makers—Apple among them—are watching their supplies dwindle.
According to recent reports, the popular MacBook Air, a flagship lightweight laptop, has become available only “while supplies last”—an unusual disclaimer in the polished communications of the California-based brand. The reason is none other than the major semiconductor producers pivoting toward the AI business, where profit margins are significantly higher. Companies like TSMC, whose ultra-precision factories can cost over $400 million, are running at full capacity but prioritizing the most lucrative orders.
The result is a classic supply-and-demand cocktail: lower availability of wafers for personal computers, higher production costs, and consequently price hikes that in some Apple models have reached several hundred dollars. The famously tight-lipped company has been forced to openly acknowledge the bottleneck—something that only happens when pressure is extreme.
Faced with the gridlock, Tim Cook’s team has deployed its tried-and-true reactive capability. According to industry sources, Apple is not only negotiating with its usual partners but is also exploring the use of Chinese suppliers previously blacklisted by the Pentagon—such as ChangXin Memory Technologies and Yangtze Memory Technologies—in a move aimed at bypassing geopolitical restrictions and securing material flow. The maneuver, not without political risk, demonstrates that even the tech giant is not immune to the swings of the global industry.
Beyond the anecdote of the sold-out product, this episode leaves two lessons. The first is structural: artificial intelligence is transforming not only what we do with machines, but also how and with what they are built. The second is strategic: in a scarcity environment, agility and a willingness to renegotiate alliances become assets as valuable as the chips themselves.
