Amazon Offers a Glimpse of New Human Jobs in a World of AI-Powered Robots

The tech industry seems divided on the role of human workers in an AI-driven future. On one side, some believe nearly all jobs—except, perhaps, their own—will be taken over by bots (venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, for instance, seems convinced his role as an investor could never be automated).

On the other, there’s the belief that robots will handle tedious, labor-intensive tasks, acting as human collaborators while people take on new roles created by this technological revolution. The latter view has stronger historical precedent. The World Economic Forum predicts that while current tech trends will displace 92 million jobs, they’ll also generate 170 million new ones.

But for those without the financial means or intellectual inclination to pursue a master’s in AI and machine learning—particularly workers in unskilled positions like warehouse labor—what does a robot-filled future look like for them?

Amazon offered a hint at one possible path when it recently unveiled Vulcan, a robot capable of “sensing” its environment, designed to work alongside human employees in logistics. According to CEO Andy Jassy, the system enhances workplace safety by taking on physically demanding tasks while creating opportunities for workers to train in robotics maintenance.

The robot will retrieve items from high and low shelves, reducing strain on human workers, who will focus on mid-level storage or items the machine can’t yet handle. Amazon also highlighted its upskilling programs, retraining some warehouse employees as robotics technicians—roles that didn’t exist before. The company claims automation has already spawned hundreds of new job categories, from on-site reliability engineers to robotic floor supervisors.

However, the transition won’t be one-to-one: fewer humans will be needed to oversee robots than to manually run a warehouse, and not every worker will have the aptitude or desire to reskill. Still, Amazon’s decision to pair its tech announcement with training initiatives is telling. Until now, few companies have clarified how the working class will fit into an automated future. Some, like an AI startup founder cited by TechCrunch, even speculate that humans might end up relying on public assistance if AI takes over all labor.

In this new landscape, jobs could transform: instead of cashiers, there might be automation monitors; instead of fast-food cooks, robot kitchen operators. Managing machines could become a baseline skill, much like using a computer is today.

That said, full-scale robotization may never materialize. Perhaps only corporate giants like Amazon or automotive manufacturers will adopt such technology en masse, while sectors like retail and food service continue relying on human labor for decades.

It’s worth remembering that Amazon previously tried—and largely failed—to expand its cashierless Amazon Go technology across the retail industry. Resistance from competitors and revelations that the system relied on human workers in India to label images led to its decline. This case shows that, despite advances, full automation remains more of a promise than a reality.

Ultimately, the future of work may be neither a utopia of leisure nor a dystopia of mass unemployment, but an uncertain middle ground where humans and robots share workspaces—creating opportunities for some and challenges for many.
