New Details on “AI PCs”: Microsoft and Intel Partner to Define the Future

The Rise of AI in PCs: Microsoft and several chipmakers, such as Intel, have been driving the arrival of “AI PCs,” which use generative artificial intelligence and large language models to facilitate various tasks in an innovative way. However, the definition of this new type of PC was unclear until now.

Unifying Criteria: At a recent event held in Taipei, Intel revealed details about the features that, together with Microsoft, they have agreed upon as requirements for an “AI PC.” Among these, the presence of an NPU (Neural Processing Unit), a co-pilot, and a dedicated key for it on the keyboard stands out.

Enhanced Copilot: Microsoft Copilot, the AI assistant introduced last year, currently runs in the cloud. However, starting with the Windows 24H2 update, scheduled for this summer, Copilot is expected to take advantage of NPUs to run locally on AI PCs. This will allow it to perform many tasks without relying on the cloud, improving speed and user experience.

Copilot Key: To facilitate access to Copilot’s features, Microsoft and Intel have introduced a dedicated key on the keyboards of “AI PCs.” This key will allow users to quickly and easily activate the assistant to perform various tasks such as navigating settings, searching for files, performing calculations, or even generating creative content.

Technical Requirements: In addition to the NPU and the Copilot key, “AI PCs” must have a CPU, a GPU, and a minimum performance of 40 TOPS on the NPU. The latter feature aims to ensure that AI PCs have the capacity to process AI tasks efficiently.

Beyond Text and Image Generation: The applications of AI in PCs go beyond text and image generation. “AI PCs” are expected to boost image processing, search engines, and other areas, transforming the way we interact with our computers.

An AI-Powered Future: Intel also announced in Taipei an initiative to provide developers with the tools they need to create new software that takes full advantage of the AI capabilities of PCs. This initiative aims to foster innovation and the development of applications that benefit users in various areas.

In Summary: The collaboration between Microsoft and Intel marks an important step in defining “AI PCs.” The integration of NPU, Copilot, and the dedicated key are just the beginning of a new era in which AI will be at the service of users to optimize their computing experience.
