TikTok Announces Updates to Creator and User Community Guidelines

The leading platform for viral content, TikTok, will implement significant changes to its Community Guidelines starting September 13, aiming to make them more transparent and accessible for users.

What’s Included in the New Updates?

According to a statement by Sandeep Grover, TikTok’s Global Head of Trust and Safety, the updates include:

  • clearer summary of each policy.
  • New regulations addressing misinformation.
  • Consolidated rules on gambling, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and firearms into a single section.
  • Refinements to policies against bullying and other inappropriate behavior.

Users can review and compare current and upcoming guidelines in the following categories:

  • Safety and Civility
  • Mental and Behavioral Health
  • Sensitive and Adult Themes
  • Integrity and Authenticity
  • Regulated Goods and Services
  • Privacy and Security

Changes in Moderation and Content Policies

Previously, the Content Moderation section emphasized balancing creative expression and harm prevention. However, the updated version removes the term “trustworthy” and instead highlights TikTok’s goal of being a “safe, fun, and creative” space.

Additionally, rules on misinformation have been adjusted, extending restrictions to “crises and major civic events”—not just emergencies.

Updates to TikTok LIVE, Comments, and Monetization

The platform has strengthened policies in key areas:

  • TikTok LIVE: Creators will now be held responsible for everything that occurs during their streams, even when using third-party tools (e.g., text-to-speech for offensive comments).
  • “For You” Feed: Will no longer promote streams with “low-quality content” (e.g., blank screens) or “distressing material” (such as horror makeup).
  • Comments: Irrelevant, rude, or offensive messages will be deprioritized.

Why These Changes?

Grover explained that the updates follow consultations with creators, experts, and organizations, including TikTok’s Regional Advisory Councils. The platform is also training its moderation teams (both human and AI-powered) to enforce these rules and will continue investing in advanced technology, including artificial intelligence.

These adjustments come shortly after the rollout of Community Notes for fact-checking and parental control tools, reinforcing TikTok’s commitment to a safer user experience.
