Amazon’s Brand Refresh: Subtle Yet Impactful

Behind Amazon’s iconic logo lies a vast and ever-expanding visual universe. The London-based agency Koto was tasked with unifying this ecosystem, redesigning not only the tech giant’s core identity but also over 50 sub-brands, creating a flexible and modern system built for global scale.

What comes to mind when you think of Amazon?

Perhaps a package at your doorstep, a delivery van, or that instantly recognizable smile. Yet behind that friendly gesture lies one of the world’s most intricate brand architectures, spanning services from e-commerce and streaming to artificial intelligence and healthcare.

A Redesign with the Smile at Its Core

Koto led the first major update to Amazon’s logo in over two decades. The arrow, symbolizing the sale of products “from A to Z,” remains, but the focus now shifts to a more expressive and warm smile. This change reinforces Amazon’s mission: to make life easier and more enjoyable for its customers, whether they’re shopping on the app, receiving an order, streaming on Prime Video, or even managing a prescription.

A Unified System for a Diversified Giant

Amazon’s exponential growth in recent years led to a fragmented visual identity. Different teams, markets, and sub-brands developed slightly varying design languages. Koto’s solution was a cohesive system that preserved the brand’s essence while ensuring clarity and consistency across all touchpoints.

The Devil’s in the Details

The redesign includes refined elements:

  • A more pronounced and approachable smile.
  • A custom typeface, Ember Modern, optimized for readability and personality.
  • An expanded color palette, adaptable across platforms and regions.

Massive (Yet Understated) Implementation

The most striking aspect is the quiet scale of this refresh. Without fanfare, the new identity has already rolled out across delivery vans, employee uniforms, packaging, apps, and even Amazon-sponsored Formula 1 race cars. This isn’t a radical reboot but a careful evolution—preserving the familiar while modernizing every detail.

Why This Redesign Matters

  1. Even leaders need updates: Even giants must adapt to stay relevant.
  2. Consistency doesn’t erase character: Unification can happen without losing authenticity.
  3. Good design is invisible: When executed well, it enhances the experience without drawing attention to itself.

For Koto, this project cements its reputation as a leader in strategic design. For Amazon, it reinforces the ability to connect with millions of users seamlessly, proving that even the world’s most famous smile can be elegantly refreshed.

In the end, a successful rebrand isn’t about the noise it makes—it’s about how effortlessly it integrates into people’s lives. Amazon has mastered this with finesse.
