Microsoft has decided to lay off around 650 workers from its gaming division, according to an internal report shared online by IGN. These new layoffs come in addition to the 1,900 employees who were let go eight months ago in the same sector, following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.
In a note to staff, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, explained that these cuts are also related to the aforementioned acquisition.
“As part of the reorganization of our team following the acquisition and with the goal of better managing our business, we have made the decision to eliminate around 650 positions in Microsoft Gaming, mostly corporate and support roles, to ensure long-term success for our structure,” the statement reads.
Spencer clarifies that no game, device, or experience projects will be canceled, and no studios will be closed. However, after the previous round of layoffs, Microsoft shut down several studios, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin.
