Canva wants users to pay significantly more for its AI tools.

The graphic design platform has decided to considerably raise prices for certain customers. In particular, Canva Teams subscribers on older plans will experience a 300% increase in their costs. For example, the price for a five-person plan will rise from $119.99 per year to $500. However, as a temporary measure, users will receive a 40% discount during the first year before the new rate is fully implemented. Canva is justifying this substantial increase by highlighting its new AI-powered design features, such as the Magic Studio toolset.

Raising prices on such a widely used platform poses risks for Canva. A sharp cost increase could lead to a loss of users, particularly those with tighter budgets or small businesses that rely on the service for their design needs. Additionally, this hike may cause dissatisfaction among loyal users who have been subscribed for years, potentially prompting a migration toward more affordable or free alternatives. Although Canva points to its new AI-driven features to justify the price hike, there is a risk that not all users will perceive the added value as sufficient to justify the higher investment, which could harm its reputation and customer base in the long run.

Another challenge Canva faces in raising its prices is the direct competition from platforms like Adobe Express, a service that has gained strength in the graphic design space. Adobe Express offers a similar range of tools, also powered by artificial intelligence, and benefits from the support of Adobe, a brand with a solid track record in design. While Canva has been popular for its user-friendly interface, accessible to non-professionals, Adobe Express has improved its ease of use, attracting both amateur and professional designers. With competitive pricing and strong integration with other Adobe tools, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, Adobe Express could attract users looking for advanced features or more affordable costs instead of paying the substantial increase Canva proposes. This competition makes the decision to raise prices even more delicate, as users may see Adobe as a viable alternative.
