After several years of efforts to replace physical driver’s licenses and ID cards with digital versions on iPhone and Android, the process has progressed at an extremely slow pace due to government bureaucracy. To date, only a handful of states support Apple’s digital ID feature in the Wallet app.

Some states have begun issuing digital ID cards through specialized apps. However, one of these states has suddenly halted this initiative.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has informed digital ID holders that the state is looking for a new provider to continue the program. The FLHSMV has advised users to delete the digital ID apps from their devices and return to exclusively using physical ID cards while a new, possibly more affordable provider is selected.
