The turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps has evolved significantly since its launch in 2009, incorporating increasingly sophisticated features. However, until now, a notable limitation remained: the system’s inability to alert drivers when they were in an incorrect lane before a crucial maneuver.

That is about to change. Google has announced it will soon implement real-time lane guidance, a feature that solves this problem through the extensive use of artificial intelligence. Although its initial launch has certain limitations, it represents a milestone in assisted navigation.

The innovation will debut “in the coming months” in Polestar 4 models in the United States and Sweden. The system works through an intelligent process: it analyzes lane markings and road signs via the vehicle’s front-facing cameras and merges this data in real-time with Google Maps’ route information.

In practice, this means that if you are approaching an intersection or exit and you are in a lane that does not allow you to perform the maneuver, the application will proactively alert you. The warning will be delivered through a combination of clear visual alerts on the screen and audible signals, giving the driver enough time to change lanes safely.

Initially, this functionality will only be available for highway driving, with plans to later extend it to other types of roads. Google has also confirmed its intention to collaborate with other key automotive manufacturers to integrate this technology into a wider range of vehicles. This expansion will likely include brands that already use Google’s built-in system, such as Volvo, Honda, Ford, and Nissan, suggesting that this advanced driving assistance could soon become an industry standard.
