The NBA Leaps into the Future: Immersive Games Are Coming to Apple Vision Pro

The intersection of sports and technology is taking a significant step forward. Apple has announced that a selection of NBA games will be broadcast in an immersive format for Apple Vision Pro users, targeting the 2025-26 season. This initiative, revealed last Friday, represents a milestone in how fans consume sports entertainment.

The Los Angeles Lakers are among the flagship teams for this project. Their games will be filmed and broadcast in Apple Immersive Video, a format specifically designed for Apple’s spatial computing headset. According to the company, this technology will allow viewers to experience the game from revolutionary angles, making them feel the intensity and energy of the court as if they were physically present—a level of engagement traditional broadcasts cannot achieve.

Schedule and Cutting-Edge Technology

The schedule for these immersive games is expected to be released by the end of this fall, with the first broadcast slated for early 2026. The production will utilize the Blackmagic Design URSA Cine Immersive Live camera, launched in early 2024, which was specifically engineered to capture video for Apple’s immersive ecosystem.

Availability and Access Requirements

The Spectrum SportsNet app will be the primary platform for distributing these games, though access will initially be limited to fans within the Lakers’ regional broadcast territory: Southern California, Hawaii, and parts of Southern Nevada, including Las Vegas. To enjoy the experience, users will need:

  • An Apple Vision Pro updated to at least visionOS 26.
  • An active subscription to Spectrum Broadband or Spectrum SportsNet.

Additional Viewing Options

Beyond the immersive broadcasts, Vision Pro owners will have access to full game replays and highlights via the NBA app, subject to regional availability. Spectrum subscribers can also watch traditional game broadcasts through the Spectrum TV app, while those with an NBA League Pass can do so through the league’s official application.

Precedent for Immersive Sports

This is not Apple’s first foray into immersive sports content. Last year, the company released a series of productions for Vision Pro, including coverage of the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, laying the groundwork for what is now a natural expansion of its commitment to redefining the audiovisual experience.
