A coalition of lawyers and families is preparing a wave of lawsuits against Roblox, the popular online gaming platform, accusing it of failing to adequately protect children from sexual exploitation and predatory behavior. This legal action follows a federal case that could set a precedent for digital companies’ responsibility toward their youngest users.
Allegations and Roblox’s Response
Recently, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit alleging that Roblox intentionally failed to implement sufficient safeguards to prevent minors from being exposed to inappropriate content or exploitative situations. The company, however, has denied these claims, stating in an official release that it dedicates significant resources to ensuring a safe environment, combining advanced AI and human moderation around the clock.
Growing Lawsuits and Questionable Policies
The Dolman Law Group, representing affected parents and minors, has already filed five lawsuits in different courts. One of them, submitted in California, argues that Roblox’s moderation policies are inadequate, allowing sexually explicit games and suspicious usernames that bypass the platform’s filters.
Additionally, the effectiveness of its AI-powered “Sentinel” system, designed to monitor chats and detect potential threats, has been called into question. While Roblox claims Sentinel flagged over 1,200 child exploitation attempts in the first half of 2025, critics argue the system remains flawed.
Hundreds of Cases Under Investigation
According to Wired, the Dolman Law Group is reviewing around 300 additional complaints linked to abuse on the platform, most involving girls under 16. Furthermore, seven other law firms are reportedly investigating hundreds more cases. The scrutiny has also extended to Discord, another platform frequently associated with similar incidents.
Past Legal Issues and Roblox’s Changes
This isn’t the first time Roblox has faced legal challenges. In 2023, a class-action lawsuit accused it of deceptive advertising for marketing itself as a child-safe space despite moderation failures. Other controversies have revolved around its microtransaction system (Robux), likened to gambling mechanics for minors.
In response, the company has strengthened safety measures, including parental controls, chat restrictions, and age verification. However, the current lawsuits could push for even stricter policy changes.
Conclusion
While Roblox maintains its commitment to child safety, the surge in lawsuits and ongoing investigations suggest its current safeguards may be insufficient. The case could establish a major legal precedent regarding digital platforms’ accountability in protecting minors.
