Technology Behind the Stream
As Mashable’s media partner, Sen averages 20 hours of daily live coverage, with just a few seconds of latency as the signal travels to Earth (via NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System) before reaching viewers like you. Brief signal interruptions (ranging from seconds to 20 minutes) are normal and occur due to technical adjustments or the ISS’s solar panels blocking transmission. During these gaps, Sen replays recent footage to maintain the broadcast.
A Unique Orbital Journey
The ISS circles Earth 16 times a day, gradually shifting westward with each orbit. “Every time you tune in, you might see something completely new—you never know what wonders will appear,” Black noted. When the station passes over Earth’s night side, an on-screen message displays “Sunrise in X minutes” and the location, such as “Over Tanzania.”
