Nintendo Raises Prices of Original Switch Console Due to “Market Conditions”

Nintendo announced on Friday a price increase for its original Nintendo Switch consoles, effective August 3rd. The company cited “current market conditions” as the reason behind the adjustment—a phrase many analysts believe refers to trade tariffs imposed during Donald Trump’s administration.

The affected products include:

  • Nintendo Switch (OLED Model)
  • Standard Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Select Nintendo Switch accessories

Additionally, other items such as certain amiibo figures, the Nintendo Alarmo Sound Watch, and some upcoming Switch 2 accessories will also see price hikes.

Nintendo has not yet disclosed the exact new pricing. Currently, the base Switch model retails for $299.99, while the OLED version is priced at $349.99.

The company also hinted at a possible future price increase for the Switch 2, which currently has a launch price of $450.

“Pricing for the Switch 2, physical and digital games, and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions will remain unchanged for now,” the company stated in its announcement. “However, we do not rule out potential adjustments in the future.”

The announcement coincided with Nintendo’s first-quarter earnings report, which revealed that Switch 2 sales had reached 5.82 million units since its launch on June 5th.

To mitigate tariff impacts, Nintendo had shifted much of its production from China to Vietnam. However, recent updates to U.S. trade tariffs on Vietnamese imports could complicate this strategy.

This move highlights the challenges faced by tech companies in a global market increasingly shaped by trade tensions.
