Tea, an app that allows women to post anonymous reviews about men they’ve dated, announced on Friday that it suffered a data breach, with hackers gaining access to 72,000 images.
The compromised data includes 13,000 selfies and photo IDs submitted for account verification, along with 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages, according to the company. Tea clarified that no email addresses or phone numbers were exposed, and only users registered before February 2024 were affected.
The company stated it has strengthened its security measures: “We’ve engaged external cybersecurity experts and worked tirelessly to secure our systems. Additional safeguards have now been implemented, and the data vulnerability has been resolved.”
The breach came to light after users on 4chan claimed to be sharing personal data and selfies from Tea, having discovered an unprotected database.
The hack occurred amid a surge in the app’s popularity. As of Saturday morning, Tea remained the top-ranked free app on Apple’s App Store.
