A dangerous hacker group known as “Predator Sparrow” (or “Gonjeshke Darande”), allegedly linked to Israel, has escalated its cyberattack campaign against Iran, wreaking havoc on its financial infrastructure. Following a recent attack on Iran’s Bank Sepah, this highly aggressive collective managed to wipe out over $90 million in funds stored on Nobitex, one of the country’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges.
However, this is not an isolated incident. Predator Sparrow has been behind some of the most devastating cyberattacks in recent years, demonstrating an unprecedented ability to cripple critical infrastructure. In previous operations, the group disabled thousands of payment systems at Iranian gas stations, causing widespread fuel supply disruptions, and even triggered a fire at a steel plant through a sophisticated cyber intrusion.
Now, amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the group appears to have set its sights on undermining Iran’s economic stability, targeting banks, financial systems, and cryptocurrency platforms. Their strategy suggests a clear objective: weakening Iran from within, using cyberspace as an alternative battleground.
As Iranian authorities scramble to contain these attacks, the specter of a large-scale cyberwar looms over the region, with unpredictable consequences for the global economy and security.
