Reports indicate that a group of Chinese hackers, allegedly backed by their government, breached phone communications linked to Kamala Harris’s campaign, former President Donald Trump, and vice-presidential candidate JD Vance.
Sources suggest that the hackers also attempted to access contacts connected to high-ranking officials within the Biden administration.
Although it is unclear which specific data was compromised, the chosen targets are highly valued by foreign actors interested in gathering intelligence.
U.S. Government Response and Scope of the Attack
In a joint statement, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) announced they are investigating the security breach. These agencies responded swiftly by alerting affected telecommunications companies and providing technical support.
After the attack was uncovered, intelligence officials briefed congressional committees on the threat. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner called the situation “severe,” stating that it is under close monitoring.
Identified as Salt Typhoon in cybersecurity circles, this Chinese hacker group is believed to have infiltrated multiple telecommunications networks in recent months. Investigators suspect the attackers may be seeking sensitive information, such as wiretap requests from the Department of Justice, posing a high risk to national security.
Before these attacks on political figures, a separate group of cybercriminals had already targeted key U.S. telecommunications providers, such as AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, which serve millions nationwide. The hackers used advanced techniques to infiltrate systems managing large volumes of internet traffic and network data, impacting companies responsible for critical infrastructure.
In response, Trump’s campaign linked this breach to other alleged foreign cyber efforts, suggesting potential coordination among nations like China, Iran, and Russia to attack the U.S. political and electoral infrastructure.
Growing Cybersecurity Concerns
This incident highlights the increasingly serious cybersecurity risks posed by foreign actors seeking access to U.S. political systems and infrastructure. There is further suspicion that Chinese hackers have conducted covert influence campaigns on social media during U.S. elections, raising concerns among national security officials as these cyber threats continue to escalate.
