Nielsen’s latest study confirms a clear trend: YouTube continues to solidify its dominance in TV consumption.
According to the April 2025 “Media Distributor Gauge” report, the video platform hit a new milestone by remaining the leader in TV viewership for the third consecutive month, capturing 12.4% of total viewing time. This figure not only surpasses the 12% recorded in March but also reflects significant growth compared to the 9.6% it held a year ago.
The results highlight YouTube’s increasing dominance over traditional entertainment giants like Disney (10.7%), Paramount, and Netflix. Additionally, internal data from the platform reveals that, during the first quarter of 2025, TVs were the primary device for watching YouTube in the United States.
But YouTube’s growth may not stop there. During its annual Upfront event for advertisers, the company announced a major deal with the NFL, securing exclusive global streaming rights for the first Friday night game of the season. This marks YouTube’s debut in live NFL broadcasts—a move that could further boost its share of the TV market.
