Artificial intelligence (AI) already demonstrates its creativity by painting, writing, producing videos, and composing music. But could it also revolutionize the way we conceive and materialize spaces?
In the field of architecture, there has traditionally been a gap between built projects and purely conceptual ideas, often referred to as “paper architecture.” While physical laws impose constraints in reality, architects’ imaginations have found in technology an ally to expand their horizons. Today, advances in AI are taking this theoretical exploration to unprecedented levels.
Karl Daubmann from the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University notes: “Images generated by tools like Midjourney or Stable Diffusion often seem innovative—influenced by multiple sources yet not mere copies. There’s something genuinely new about them.”
Experimentation and Collaboration: AI as a Creative Catalyst
The exhibition “Transductions: Artificial Intelligence in Architectural Experimentation,” held at the Pratt Institute in New York, brought together works by over 30 professionals exploring the generative and collaborative potential of AI in architectural research. Many of them have been investigating this field for years, long before AI became mainstream.
The exhibition’s curators—Jason Vigneri-Beane, Olivia Vien, Stephen Slaughter, and Hart Marlow—emphasize that the showcased pieces emerge from a continuous dialogue between architectural theories, diverse techniques, and multiple formats, ranging from images and text to animations, mixed reality, and digital fabrication.
The goal is not to present ready-to-build projects but to capture this pioneering moment in which architecture begins integrating AI into its creative process.
From Early Software to AI: A Constant Evolution
Technology has been key in helping architecture overcome functional and aesthetic barriers. Since 1963, with the groundbreaking Sketchpad—which allowed on-screen object manipulation—manual drafting has given way to programs like Revit, SketchUp, and BIM, now essential tools for designing blueprints, optimizing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
AI as an Ally, Not a Rival
The architects behind “Transductions” see AI as a complementary tool, not a threat. “I understand it may cause concern, but these debates aren’t new,” says Vigneri-Beane. “AI doesn’t work alone—achieving meaningful results requires time and judgment. My architectural language has sharpened, and my visual thinking has been activated like never before.”
Vien agrees: “These are powerful tools for architects and designers. Are they the absolute future of architecture? No, but they enrich our tradition, not just in representing ideas but also as a source of inspiration.”
Ultimately, AI does not replace human creativity but amplifies it, opening unexplored paths in architectural design and conceptualization.
