Elon Musk’s Government Efficiency Department (DOGE) is reportedly organizing a hackathon next week aimed at developing a “mega API” that would centralize and streamline access to sensitive taxpayer data, according to a Wired report.

The event is said to be led by Gavin Kliger and Sam Corcos, two DOGE employees who also work at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Corcos, who is also the CEO of health tech startup Levels, has reportedly told colleagues at DOGE that the goal is to create “one API to rule them all”—a clear nod to The Lord of the Rings.

This powerful API would allow cloud service providers to access confidential tax information, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, tax returns, and employment history, with the ability to export this data to external systems. Wired’s sources suggest that a third-party vendor may manage parts of the project, with Palantir, the controversial data analytics firm, frequently mentioned as a leading candidate.

An anonymous IRS employee raised concerns to Wired, stating: “This is essentially a Musk-controlled backdoor to Americans’ most sensitive information, bypassing the usual safeguards that protect this data.”

The initiative has sparked skepticism due to potential privacy and security risks, particularly if external corporations gain access to confidential tax data without clear regulatory oversight.
