YouTube is adjusting how it counts views for YouTube Shorts to give creators a clearer understanding of their short-form content’s performance, the company announced. Starting now, each time a Short is played or replayed, it will count as a view.
Previously, a view was only registered after a user watched the video for a certain amount of time. With this new method, view counts will be higher, more accurately reflecting how many times a Short is started.
YouTube says this update responds to creator feedback, as they want better insight into their Shorts’ true reach. The change will help creators assess their content’s impact, refine their strategies, and present clearer metrics to potential brand partners.
This adjustment brings YouTube Shorts in line with platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, which already count views from the moment a video starts playing. As a result, creators can more easily compare their short-form video performance across different social networks.
For those who still prefer the previous metric (based on watch time), YouTube will keep it available in the “Advanced Mode” of YouTube Analytics under the name “engaged views.” This data will continue to show how many viewers kept watching after the Short began playing.
YouTube clarifies that this change will not affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program, as those factors will still be calculated based on “engaged views” rather than the updated view count.
The new system takes effect on March 31st.
