5 Chinese AI Startups to Watch in 2025, Beyond DeepSeek

China’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector is experiencing rapid growth, with numerous emerging startups surpassing the advancements of big names like DeepSeek. While established companies dominate the spotlight, Chinese AI startups are developing advanced tools and systems that compete globally, thanks to strong support and investment.

Ben James, founder of 404 and Bittensor Subnet 17, told Techopedia:

“DeepSeek has highlighted the impressive AI ecosystem in China. However, there are other startups solving real-world problems and making a significant impact.”

Below are five Chinese AI startups poised to stand out in 2025:

  • China’s AI sector is advancing rapidly, with startups outpacing DeepSeek in innovation.
  • Stepfun develops advanced models like Step-1V and Step-2, with funding from investors such as Tencent.
  • MiniMax has gained international popularity with its Talkie app, which allows users to interact with virtual characters.
  • Moonshot AI stands out with its chatbot Kimi and the K0-math model, designed to solve complex mathematical problems.
  • Doubao, from ByteDance, is known as the “ChatGPT of China” and boasts 13 million daily users.

Founded in 2023 by Jiang Daxin, former chief scientist at Microsoft Research Asia, Stepfun has positioned itself as a key player in the AI market. Its models, such as Step-1V (multimodal with 100 billion parameters) and Step-2 (with trillions of parameters), are designed to improve accuracy and complex reasoning.

Komninos Chatzipapas, founder of HeraHaven.AI, noted:

“Stepfun has received hundreds of millions in funding, though exact figures are not public.”

Founded in 2019 by Tang Jie and Li Juanzi, Zhipu AI specializes in large-scale language models. In 2024, it launched Ying, a text-to-video model that generates six-second clips in 30 seconds.

Created in 2021 by former SenseTime employees, MiniMax has made a global impact with its Talkie app, which allows users to interact with virtual characters. The app reached 17 million downloads in 2024. Additionally, its Hailuo AI platform offers AI-generated text, music, and video tools.

Jason Snyder, co-founder of SuperTruth, warned:
“Talkie must evolve beyond novelty to maintain long-term relevance.”

Founded in 2023, Moonshot AI has stood out with its Kimi chatbot, capable of processing up to 2 million Chinese characters in a single input. In 2024, it launched K0-math, a model designed to solve complex mathematical problems. Its enhanced version, Kimi 1.5, competes with models like GPT-4 in coding and logical reasoning tasks.

Snyder commented:
“Moonshot needs a solid distribution strategy to compete with OpenAI.”

Launched in 2023, Doubao is the most popular AI chatbot in China, with 13 million daily users. ByteDance has also developed tools like PixelDance and Seaweed for video generation, and Dreamina, an AI-powered platform for creating images and videos.

Pam Aungst Cronin, founder of Pam Ann AI, stated:
“Doubao is China’s equivalent to ChatGPT, and ByteDance is competing directly with tools like OpenAI’s Sora.”

The competition in AI is not just about creating advanced models but also about controlling the data that fuels them. Snyder emphasized:
“China is striving to dominate AI and the data that drives it. If it sets the global standard, we could lose not only technological leadership but also control over the narratives that define the future.”

These five Chinese startups demonstrate that China’s AI ecosystem goes beyond DeepSeek, with innovations that could redefine the global landscape in the coming years.
