Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, has spoken about the company’s first device, which could even replace smartphones as we know them. OpenAI is not only aiming to compete in the field of artificial intelligence but also to challenge tech giants like Apple and Samsung in the development of innovative products. In an interview with the Asian media outlet Nikkei, Altman confirmed the rumors that have been worrying these companies: OpenAI plans to launch AI devices that could replace mobile phones.
According to Altman, OpenAI’s goal is to create a device as revolutionary as the iPhone was in 2007. Additionally, the CEO mentioned that the company is considering developing its own semiconductors for these new devices, which would mark a milestone in the industry.
Although Altman has not provided specific details about what this device will be like, this is not the first time such a project has been discussed. In September 2024, Jony Ive, Apple’s former designer, revealed that he is collaborating with OpenAI on the development of a new device. In an article by The New York Times, both Altman and Ive discussed how generative AI has opened the door to creating computing devices that surpass the capabilities of traditional software. Examples mentioned include devices that can identify objects, make travel bookings, and assist with everyday tasks.
Everything suggests that the device OpenAI is working on could be similar to Humane’s AI Pin or the Rabbit R1. These are not conventional smartphones, but they perform many of the functions you would expect from a mobile device, such as recognizing the environment, displaying relevant information, and acting as personal assistants to enhance productivity.
However, developing AI devices is not without challenges. The AI Pin, for example, has been criticized for its high price and poor performance. The Rabbit R1 has also faced controversy for failing to meet user expectations and for having security vulnerabilities. These failures demonstrate that creating a successful AI device is a risky bet.
OpenAI is not the only company looking to replace the smartphone. Other manufacturers are also exploring alternatives, such as mixed reality glasses, though many of these projects have struggled to gain market acceptance. Despite the obstacles, the race to create the next revolutionary device continues, and OpenAI seems determined to lead this innovation.
