Sam Altman has provided insights into the evolution from GPT-4 to GPT-5, as well as his vision to solidify dominance in the AI arena.
It has been a very active week for OpenAI. After unveiling their new language model o3 and the Deep Research tool for ChatGPT, Sam Altman made revealing statements about GPT-5 and the future of AI. These comments were made during his visit to Japan, where he took the opportunity to participate in several interviews.
One of the most notable was with the channel Matsumlab, where details about the next major language model OpenAI is developing were revealed. Without mincing words, Sam Altman confirmed that the transition from GPT-4 to GPT-5 will be comparable to the leap experienced when moving from GPT-3 to GPT-4.
Although OpenAI has not provided exact figures, it is known that the advancement was significant in areas such as reasoning, information processing, the incorporation of multimodal functions, creativity in content generation, and the reduction of errors or “hallucinations” in responses.
For example, GPT-4 introduced the ability to process images, which revolutionized the capabilities of language models and tools like ChatGPT. According to Sam, with the launch of GPT-5, a similar breakthrough is expected, marking a new milestone in the evolution of language models.
GPT-5 could surpass human intelligence
Sam Altman’s statements are not limited to technical comparisons. He has also reflected on the real capabilities of GPT-5 and its impact on the industry. In fact, he mentioned a potential turning point in AI development. His words were:
“Language models are becoming so intelligent that, by the time GPT-5 or GPT-6 arrives, we might say, ‘Enough, that’s it. It’s smarter than me.’”
With this statement, OpenAI’s CEO highlighted the challenge of managing an AI that intellectually surpasses humans, emphasizing the complexity of making it accessible to the general public.
Sam Altman’s Strategic Vision
Finally, Sam Altman has revealed OpenAI’s next goal and one of the most important milestones for the industry. According to him, the great challenge is not only to improve the intelligence of the models but also to achieve efficient and autonomous integration of all available tools.
In fact, he mentioned that they are working on unifying GPT and other technologies into a single API that is not only intelligent but also capable of autonomously deciding when to perform web searches, write code, or activate voice functions without human intervention.
In summary, Sam Altman and OpenAI aim to consolidate all their functionalities into a single model capable of performing multiple tasks autonomously. However, it remains unclear whether this will be achieved with GPT-5 or in future versions.
