Singer Taylor Swift has publicly voiced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the November presidential election, partly motivated by the appearance of AI-generated deepfakes falsely showing her endorsing Donald Trump.
Swift explained that she made this decision after discovering AI-generated images portraying her in support of Trump, which raised concerns about the impact of misinformation. In an Instagram post, the artist said, “I recently learned that an AI version of ‘me’ was falsely used to endorse Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. This really triggered my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation.” As a result, she decided to be clear about her political stance. “The best way to counter misinformation is with the truth, which is why it’s important for me to be transparent about my voting intentions in this election,” she added.
In addition to her endorsement of Harris, Swift mentioned issues she’s concerned about, including LGBTQ rights, reproductive health care, and in vitro fertilization (IVF). She also encouraged her followers to register to vote through a link in her Instagram story.
The misuse of AI tools in the U.S. electoral context is a growing concern. One notable example occurred in January when a fake robocall generated by AI imitated Joe Biden’s voice to discourage voters in New Hampshire, affecting more than 20,000 people, according to CNN.
Some tech companies, such as Google, have started to implement restrictions on their AI tools, limiting access to election-related information to prevent the spread of misinformation.
This isn’t the first incident involving AI-generated images of Taylor Swift. Earlier this year, non-consensual sexualized images of the singer created with AI were shared on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), prompting the White House to call for legislative measures to address these issues.
