WWDC 2024: The Name Chosen by Apple for the AI Features Coming to iPhone, iPad, and Mac

WWDC 2024 will be primarily focused on artificial intelligence innovations for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and Apple has chosen a fitting name to promote this technology.

We are just a few days away from the start of WWDC 2024, and all eyes are on the artificial intelligence features coming to iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple devices. The Cupertino company has decided to name its new suite of tools Apple Intelligence.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple Intelligence will be available starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. This name will be reserved for AI features developed by Apple, which will be integrated into as many of its applications as possible.

Apple Intelligence is expected to be the highlight of the WWDC 2024 keynote. Gurman assures that the AI features under this name will not focus on generating images or videos but rather on offering tools that are useful and productive for users.

As we mentioned earlier, WWDC 2024 will be the platform for launching tools such as real-time transcription of voice notes, quick photo retouching with functions similar to Google Photos’ Magic Eraser, automatic replies in the Mail app, and a general modernization of Safari.

Apple Intelligence Will Capture Attention at WWDC 2024

Siri will also receive a significant update, powered by large language models (LLM). It is still unclear whether this improvement will be through integration with ChatGPT or if Apple will launch its own chatbot based on OpenAI technology as a separate proposal.

Apple Intelligence will be Apple’s strategy to close the gap with its competitors in the field of artificial intelligence. The announcements at WWDC 2024 will be crucial for the success of this new strategy, where Apple aims to differentiate itself in a key aspect: data privacy.

Gurman explains that the AI features included in Apple Intelligence will run locally on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or in the cloud, depending on the computing power required. The company will implement an algorithm in its new operating systems that will determine which option is most appropriate for each task.

The Focus Will Be on Privacy

Apple will use the WWDC 2024 opening keynote to reaffirm that the functions running in the cloud will not collect user data or create profiles based on them. The company will highlight the security features of the chips used in its data centers.

Additionally, Apple Intelligence tools will be disabled by default. This means users will have to manually activate them and give consent for them to run on their devices. Initially, the catalog of devices that can take advantage of AI features will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, the upcoming iPhone 16 to be announced in September, and iPads and Macs with an M1 chip or higher.

The WWDC 2024 opening keynote will take place next Monday, June 10, at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. That is, 7:00 PM in Spain, 2:00 PM in Argentina, and 11:00 AM in Mexico. All the news from Apple’s traditional developer event will be on Hipertextual, which will provide live coverage from Apple Park.
