AI chatbot integrated into X (Twitter) will be available for anyone to modify.
Elon Musk, the well-known entrepreneur, has confirmed that Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by his company xAI and present on X (Twitter), will become open source this week. This announcement comes in a context of tensions with OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, Grok’s main competitor.
It is not yet clear whether access to all of Grok’s source code will be opened or only to certain parts. Meta’s decision to open source LLaMA 2 generated controversy, as the license limited its commercial use.
Musk’s criticism was not slow in coming. He has taken the opportunity to criticize OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The businessman has called OpenAI a “lie” and accused the company of becoming a “de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft. These statements are not surprising, given the ongoing litigation between Musk and OpenAI.
In late 2023, Musk presented this ambitious project: Grok as an “unfettered” alternative to ChatGPT. According to the businessman, Grok accesses information in real time and is not limited to providing politically correct answers.
However, access to Grok is limited. Currently, only X Premium+ users (the most expensive subscription on X) can access it. This subscription costs $16 per month and offers greater reach to publications and an ad-free experience.
Although the real goals are unknown, and there are many unknowns in this regard, since Grok’s integration into X has been seen as a strategy to increase the platform’s revenue. The exact day on which Grok’s source code will be opened is unknown. Musk has a history of not meeting deadlines for his projects.
It was recently revealed that Musk was seeking funding to expand Grok’s development. The goal would be to raise around $6 billion.
