At a time where operational resilience is more critical than ever, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a new feature within CloudWatch focused on incident management. This tool allows organizations to automatically generate detailed post-incident analysis reports, streamlining a process that has traditionally consumed significant resources and valuable time.
The announcement, made officially through the AWS blog, comes in a context where the stability of cloud infrastructure has been under scrutiny, following recent outages that affected global services.
How It Works and Its Advantages
This new feature solidifies the capabilities of CloudWatch, AWS’s native monitoring service. It automatically captures essential data for diagnosis, including:
- Key operational telemetry from the time of the incident.
- Relevant AWS service configurations.
- Findings and conclusions from internal investigations carried out by AWS systems.
This approach not only speeds up report generation but also standardizes the format, making it easier for engineering, DevOps, and security teams to share a common understanding of what happened and the actions taken.
Immediate Global Availability
The tool is already operational in several strategic AWS regions, ensuring access for a large part of its global customer base. The regions included in the launch are:
- Americas: US East (N. Virginia and Ohio) and US West (Oregon).
- Asia Pacific: Hong Kong, Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo.
- Europe: Frankfurt, Ireland, Spain, and Stockholm.
It is worth noting that the US East (N. Virginia) region, one of the most critical and recently affected by an outage, is among those where the tool is available.
Getting Started
To start using the functionality, users simply need to create an investigation within the CloudWatch console and select the “Incident Report” option. This move helps companies align with industry best practices, enabling them to transform adverse events into opportunities for learning and continuous improvement of their systems.
