Liang Wenfeng, the creator of DeepSeek, is being celebrated as a prominent figure in Guangdong Province, southern China, where he grew up. According to reports, he returned to his hometown to celebrate the Lunar New Year, accompanied by a security team.
At just 40 years old, Wenfeng has amassed a considerable fortune through his investment fund, High-Flyer. However, his popularity among locals has grown even further following DeepSeek’s groundbreaking discovery, which demonstrated that it is possible to develop advanced artificial intelligence models using fewer and less powerful Nvidia chips. This breakthrough has significant implications, especially in China, where access to cutting-edge chips has been restricted.
Residents of his hometown shared with the Financial Times that Wenfeng was an “exceptional student” in his youth, with a deep passion for comics and a natural talent for mathematics. Additionally, he comes from a family dedicated to education. A neighbor recalled that Wenfeng also enjoyed playing soccer. “We all grew up in this village,” the resident told the FT. “We are very proud of him.”
Despite his rising fame, Wenfeng has chosen to stay out of the spotlight, sparking curiosity among those eager to learn more about his life. Considering what has happened to other prominent Chinese executives, such as Jack Ma and Pony Ma, who faced government scrutiny after gaining too much visibility, it would not be surprising if Wenfeng decided to maintain a low profile.
