A tiny brain device could offer renewed hope to people with visual impairments.

Neurotechnology is paving the way for tackling the challenges of blindness.

A team of researchers has designed a visual device with tiny electrodes, the size of a neuron, aimed at restoring sight in blind individuals.

The earliest attempts to develop visual implants date back to the 1990s. These devices are intended for people with eye damage but whose visual cortex (the area of the brain responsible for visual processing) remains active and responsive to visual signals.

Despite the potential of these solutions, existing designs face limitations due to the considerable size of the electrodes and corrosion issues. However, the research team claims to have overcome both obstacles.

A new generation of nanoscale implants Visual implants are equipped with electrodes that transmit signals to the brain, recreating the visual experience similarly to how pixels form an image on a screen.

By creating microscopic electrodes, the team has managed to incorporate a greater number of them into a single implant. This advancement allows for more precise brain stimulation and a more detailed visual representation for the recipient.

Precision in visual representation is crucial since the image generated from brain signals does not reach the clarity of natural vision.

Additionally, the implant uses a special combination of materials to prevent corrosion. Among these materials is a conducting polymer that translates electrical signals and serves as a protective layer for the metal electrodes.

According to research findings, this combination of materials ensures both the durability and effective functioning of the device.

“We now know that it is feasible to manufacture electrodes the size of a neuron and maintain their functionality in the brain for extended periods,” stated Maria Asplund, project leader, and co-author of the study.

“The next step will be to design an implant with the capacity to accommodate thousands of electrodes,” she added.

The results of preclinical studies are promising. Initial tests in mice have shown that the implant can effectively stimulate visual perception with minimal electricity.
