Why it matters: Video production can be a daunting process, but AI comes to the rescue once again with Sony’s new flagship PTZ 4K camera. The camera’s automated tracking and framing capabilities eliminate the need for manual adjustments.
Sony has just introduced its latest PTZ 4K flagship camera, boasting advanced artificial intelligence in a compact design. The BRC-AM7 is touted as the smallest and lightest in its class, measuring less than 7 inches wide and just over 8 inches tall, weighing in at a mere 8 pounds.
However, small size doesn’t mean a lack of technology: this little shooter is packed with advanced features. Sony’s PTZ Auto Framing function, powered by AI, stands out by automatically tracking the subject and keeping it focused based on various visual indicators.
The AI framing capability is complemented by smooth pan and tilt movements at speeds ranging from 0.004 degrees per second to 180 degrees per second, ensuring natural-looking automated camera movements.
Sony has also equipped this camera with impressive imaging capabilities. By combining the 4K-compatible stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor of type 1.0 and the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine, the BRC-AM7 captures high-resolution 4K 60p images with minimal noise interference. 5K oversampling enables the capture of high-resolution 4K videos, including support for 4K HDR images, for clear playback of scenes with light and shadow contrasts.
Additionally, it offers Sony’s renowned color science, with popular picture profiles such as S-Cinetone and S-Log3 for easy grading. The built-in 20x optical zoom lens (with Clear Image Zoom of up to 40x in FHD) allows for detailed shots without sacrificing quality.
In terms of practicality, its compact size makes it easy to place in any environment, from ceilings to tripods. Solid IP connectivity enables remote transmission via networks, with compatibility with SRT, RTMP, RTSP, NDI3, and optical fiber.
The BRC-AM7 appears tailor-made for live production environments such as broadcasts, sports events, concerts, or any situation where accurately tracking fast-moving subjects is crucial. Sony plans to have the camera available for shipping in early 2025. It will also be on display from April 14th to 17th, 2024, at Sony’s booth at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas.
Sony has received overwhelming positive feedback on its AI-based tracking and framing technology and plans to expand those capabilities to additional models, including the full-frame FR7.
